ANGELTIL POTTERY

My Story
My name is Angela Tilley and I am a 26-year veteran of the United States Navy, where I attained the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. During my time in the service, I spent over 9 years overseas, including tours in Italy, Bahrain, Germany and Iraq. I retired in March 2017.
After a deployment to Iraq in 2010, I discovered pottery, and it changed the trajectory of my life. The peace that I found with the wheel and clay quieted the storm inside and helped heal the things that were broken from a life in the military. Creating with clay grounded me and I sincerely believe I still exist because of the healing power of art.
In 2018, I founded All Hands Pottery Studio, a thriving community clay studio in Norfolk, VA. The studio has over 30 members, and supports over 100 artists monthly. My goal was to create a place that marries the healing power of art and community. The studio has been voted “Best of Norfolk” for five years running by the Virginian Pilot newspaper readers, and has been featured on WVEC 13 News Now, and WTKR News Channel 3.
I work primarily in stoneware clay on the wheel. I am influenced by both ancient and modern potters, including Neolithic Banshan pottery from China to German “Fat Lava” pieces.
I am passionate about art, community outreach, and volunteerism.
I currently live in Norfolk, VA with my husband Mark and our two rescue beagles, Gunner, and Scarlett.
My Artist Statement
As a potter with a long background in the military, my work is deeply influenced by the precision, discipline and attention to detail that was instilled in me during my career. Tight, precise forms are of utmost importance in my practice, reflecting the sharpness and clarity of military life , and using bright contrasting colors to represent the joy and newfound freedom of expression of becoming a civilian again upon retirement.
I draw inspiration from the German “Fat Lava” potters of the mid century, which is characterized by bold vibrant colors and expressive dynamic shapes. The striking contrast and boldness of this style mirror the strength and energy I try to bring to my work as a potter. Additionally I am influenced by traditional Banshan pottery, which emphasizes clean lines, volume and precise crafting techniques. These forms speak to my appreciation of meticulous attention to detail, and strength, which are important themes in military life.
In my work I strive to marry the influences of these two styles, creating pieces that are both vibrant and precise. I am trying to convey a sense of joy, discipline and strength.
